3 things you need to know when getting a Spanish citizenship 🇪🇸🇵🇭

Many Filipinos dream of living in Europe to explore its rich history and vibrant culture and to take advantage of the ease of travel between countries. Now, it's much easier to make that dream a reality.

Here are 3 things Filipinos need to know when getting Spanish citizenship:

1. Apply after only 2 years of legal residence instead of 10 years.

As nationals of former Spanish colonies, Filipinos are exempted from the 10-year residency requirement as stipulated in Article 22 of the Spanish Civil code. It allows Filipinos to apply for citizenship in just 2 years of legal residence instead of 10. Phew!

2. You need to pass a Spanish language test (A2 level).

Apart from the 2-year residency requirement, Filipino applicants need to pass a standardized Spanish language tests which cover speaking, reading, and writing at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level A2. At Verb Hive, that's covered in our Spanish 1 (A1), Spanish 2 (A2.1) and Spanish 3 (A2.2) courses.

3. You also need to pass a test on Spanish history, society and laws.

Filipino applicants will also need to pass the written General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) test.

Also note that all foreign nationals who acquire Spanish nationality must renounce their previous nationality; however, again, as nationals of former Spanish colonies, we are also exempted from this. This means that Filipino citizens have the right to hold both Filipino and Spanish dual citizenship.

Isn't this great news? What are you waiting for? Why don't you start by learning Spanish? :)
